El idioma galés (Cymraeg) hoy comparte con el inglés cierta oficialidad administrativa en Gales. De origen céltico, como el bretón y el córnico, sigue siendo la lengua materna de más del 20% de la población galesa y ha experimentado un resurgimiento durante los últimos cuarenta años. Se estudia como materia obligatoria en la mayor parte de los colegios de Gales. Los letreros y otras señales de las ciudades aparecen normalmente en inglés y galés, al menos en teoría y según lo decida cada ayuntamiento

La Asamblea Nacional de Gales, que empezó a funcionar en 1999 en la capital galesa, Cardiff, posee poderes legislativos secundarios limitados. A diferencia del Parlamento Escocés no se le ha otorgado el derecho a variar el tipo básico del impuesto sobre la renta. De sus 60 diputados (Assembly Members o AMs), 40 son elegidos directamente y los otros 20 a través de listas regionales por medio del sistema de representación proporcional
